Inspiration | 5.28

I apologize for my absence! I recently returned from a long weekend in New York.

As a Midwesterner who grew up in a lower middle class family, there are places I assumed I would never go--either because I didn't have the means or because I wouldn't fit in. New York was on that list until recently. After visiting, I understand why people want to be there...why people never leave. It is truly an inspiring place.

Although I'm not back with an outfit post yet, I did want to post some of the beautiful things that gave me reason to pause today.

Personal Style | Orange Shirt

When I saw this top I instantly loved it because of it's deep orange color and cable-knit detail. It's strange though, because it's meant to be a short shirt, but it's also a sweater. If it's cold enough to wear a sweater why would I want my stomach exposed? I don't know. But! I love layering, so whenever I wear this I just add a color beneath it to compliment whatever else I'm wearing.

I'm leaving for New York on Thursday, so the posting might be minimum for awhile, but hopefully I can find some good stuff to share when I return. Happy Tuesday, all!

Personal Style | Black&White

Since I can remember, I've heard women and advertisers talk about the importance of "The little black dress." And really they essential because they can work for most occasions. Dress it up for a date night out, or keep it simple for a day in the sun. For my day of sipping sangria and reading on the porch, pairing it with a thin silk scarf was enough for me. And of course, no outfit or sunny day outside is complete without sunscreen and Ralpho the puppy dog.

Personal Style | Gifts

Although these pictures don't do the dress justice, this was gifted to me for my birthday! Straight from my ModCloth wishlist, I am even more in love with this dress than I thought I would be. I enjoy the gold and black leaf pattern, and the full skirt was really fun to move around in. I will post better pictures at a later date, it also has an open back that is not shown here. Happy Friday!

Personal Style | Birthday Girl

Today I celebrate the beginning of another year of life! Although I'm spending most of the day at the office (because that's what you do when you get old), tonight I'm going to see The Moth storytelling series in LA. Can't wait!

The dress is thrifted, but originally it's from Theory. They have a wonderful selection of unique and sophisticated dresses, but they definitely come with a large price tag. I got lucky and spent only $12. What is your favorite thrift store find?

Personal Style | Another Sunny Day

This weekend we enjoyed an unexpected heatwave, reminding me that I really need to make a decision on a swimsuit for the season. Any tips on where to buy reasonably priced swimwear?

This outfit was perfect for the heat. The pants are made thin and cotton, and the top is striped with see-through and solid fabrics that can be paired with a colorful tanktop or double as a swimsuit coverup. In this case it was just worn on a walk with my dog to the coffee shop. Happy Monday!

Personal Style | Blending In

When these photos were taken I had no idea how much my skirt matched the wall! I'll have to remember this next time I need a good camouflage look. It's warming up again here and I'm embracing the sun with a simple, floral pattered skirt and thin, sleeveless top.

Personal Style | Lemonworld

It's been raining for the last few days here, so I thought I would wear my sunniest skirt! I loved this skirt when I first saw it because I'm a sucker for mustard yellow and circle skirts--the downside is that it has no belt loops and wrinkles within five minutes of putting it on. There's no easy fix for the wrinkles, but my favorite patterned scarf worked lovely a belt. Hopefully the sun comes back soon!

Personal Style | Cloudy Beach Day

Usually on cloudy days I don't feel inclined to go to the beach, however it is Ralph the Goldendoodle's first birthday, and the windy weather never prevents him from chasing his toys through the waves! I had to bundle up a bit, layering a sweater and jacket over my usual beach dress, but Ralph's poofy coat was enough to keep him warm.

Personal Style | Color in the Lines

Some parts of the world may still be experience a cold spell, but Southern California certainly is NOT. After being caught off guard by the 90 degree weather yesterday, I wasn't going to let myself overheat again! This dress is one of my go-to outfits when I feel like wearing something cute without putting in a ton of effort. The lace back detail is one of my favorite things about it. That and the pockets. I love dresses with pockets. I should have worn some over-sized earring, but alas...I couldn't get myself out of bed in time to accessorize. I need to have a kit in my car or something. Happy Friday!
